Third Scene: Where Minister is distracted of the noise that came from outside while Dupin exchanges the letter. Lacan suggests that in this scene Dupin is in second position. Dupin feels somehow safe and powerful, thinking that Minister doesn’t see him. Here, Dupin’s position is similar to the position of Minister in second scene and Queen’s position in first scene which I’ve already mentioned before. Dupin here is enjoyed, triumphant of his revenge. He thinks he is not seen which may be associated with narcissistic, imaginary situation. Then who is in the third position in the third scene?

It is the analyzer of the structure; reader or position of psychoanalyst. Any correct following of movements of signifier in the text would take you to position of recognizing how every subject was put in place of recognition on the lack. This is the place of unconscious, substitution, seeing the letter means, being able to substitute the latter. But in what sense are we occupying the unconscious? Firstly, this happens by repetition (death drive) as I mentioned before. Secondly, there is the issue of Transference, a concept which Freud uses, referring to different kind of repetition. Between patient and doctor, analysand and analyst, the patient encounters with his/her traumas and complexes; s/he repeats them in therapy session. This is a different kind of repetition which is achieved by placing doctor in position of other of the trauma. Analyst takes the position of object of center of your unconscious desire, aggression and orientation. This is the meaning of “the analyst is in the place of the unconscious”. The analyst is substituted for original figure of trauma. For Lacan, this is also how analyst becomes “subject presumed to know”. By this analyst embodies knowledge in unconscious. His role is not “all knowing person”. By whole dynamic of situation, he’s assumed, placed to be in knowledge; because the analyst occupies place of unconscious in this kind of interaction. Because drama is repeated with that kind of substitution, doctor is able to transmit that knowledge somehow to the patient. In other words, analyst solves the drama by letting it repeat itself. At this point, we can say that literature becomes another way of transference. For the reader, it becomes a repetition; reading a story becomes a therapy. Reader sees him/herself in position of tracing, chasing after the signifier. On the other hand, discussion with Derrida about this point introduces different dimension. Derrida accuses Lacan of seeing story of illustration of psychoanalytical truth. Well, Derrida is against all kinds of truths. Derrida criticises Lacan for not paying attention to the literary dimension while applying psychoanalytical theory to text.
